Other Area Lakes
Crooked Lake
There are 2 public access sites: a single ramp in the Crooked Lake County Park with parking for a dozen cars and trailers and a single ramp in the village of Jennings at the foot of Poplar Street with parking for only a couple of vehicles. Both sites are on the west side of the lake.
Fish species include Northern Pike, Tiger Muskie, Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Pumpkinseed, Rock Bass, Perch, Crappie, Bullhead and some newly established Walleye.
A shallow lake with a maximum depth of only 12', its heavily sculptured shoreline and several large bays provide miles of enjoyable fishing. A mutual effort by MCFISH, The Crooked Lake Association, and the DNR to establish a Walleye fishery is under way at this time.
Sapphire Lake
There is one public access site off Jennings Road in the southeast corner of the lake with 10 to 12 parking spaces.
Fish species included Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Pumpkinseed, Rock Bass, Perch, Crappie, Bullhead and some newly established Walleye.
Although only 8' deep, its many points and bays provide for interesting fishing.
Through the mutual efforts of MCFISH. The Sapphire Lake Association, and the DNR, a limited Walleye fishery has been started. The continued cooperation of fisherman in the effort is appreciated.
Manistee River
Flows along the northern boundary and into the northwest corner of the county. Within the county and upstream to the east, it is primarily a river for Brown and Rainbow Trout. Approximately 10-15,000 Brown Trout fingerlings are stocked annually by the Walton Junction Sportsmen Club. As you progress downstream into neighboring Wexford county it becomes a prime Walleye and Smallmouth Bass river, while retaining its Brown trout fishery.
Muskegon River
The west branch of the Muskegon Rover contains both Brook and Brown Trout but it has limited access. The main stream contains mostly warm water species like the Largemouth and Smothmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Etc.
Clam River
Flowing into the Muskegon River, it is a "Blue Ribbon" Trout stream with the quality fishing "single hook. fly or lure only" section. Fish include Brook and Brown Trout. This river has limited access sites.
Butterfield Creek
This is also a Muskegon River tributary and has Brook and Brown Trout. Access is limited.
Hopkins and Hamm Creek
Both of these creeks flow into the Manistee and are prime small trout streams with Brook and Brown Trout. They are surrpunded mistly by state land making access fairly easy. | |
